Buhl Police Department Statement: Buhl City Pool Closed for 2025 Season Due to Lifeguard Shortage
Prepared by the Chief of Police, Buhl Police Department – April 25, 2025

The Buhl Police Department would like to address a concern that has been brought to our attention by many residents—specifically, the closure of the Buhl City Pool for the 2025 summer season. We want to clarify that this decision was not due to a lack of funding, poor management, or a failure by city leadership. Rather, it was a direct result of an ongoing shortage of certified lifeguards, a staffing issue that many communities across the country are currently facing.

Over the past several months, the City of Buhl made a concerted effort to recruit and hire the necessary number of qualified lifeguards. In previous seasons, the city offered incentives such as paying for a portion of training and certification costs, as noted in a 2023 KMVT News report (“Buhl Municipal Pool is Looking to Fill Positions for the Summer,” April 2023). Since then, the city has increased the starting wage in an effort to remain competitive and attract applicants—but unfortunately, those efforts were still not enough to fully staff the pool for the 2025 season.

The decision to close the pool was not taken lightly. The entire Buhl City Council weighed this matter with careful consideration and ultimately chose safety as the top priority. Without the required number of certified lifeguards on duty at all times, opening the pool would place the public—especially children—at unnecessary risk.

We also want to take a moment to express our full support and appreciation for our City Council. These types of decisions are incredibly difficult and often come with heavy scrutiny. Council members volunteer their time and serve because they care deeply about the community and its well-being. They are your neighbors, friends, and fellow residents who want what’s best for Buhl—especially when it comes to keeping our children safe. Their decision was made with responsibility and heart, and we stand behind them. Let’s continue to show them grace and support, especially when they’re faced with such tough calls.

This is not an issue unique to Buhl. According to the American Lifeguard Association, nearly one-third of pools across the U.S. have had to close or reduce hours due to lifeguard shortages. Communities large and small are struggling to recruit individuals willing and qualified to take on this important public safety role.

The Buhl Police Department is committed to transparency and public trust. We want our residents to know that we, along with city leadership, share your disappointment in this outcome. We also understand the importance of the city pool as a summer resource for families and youth in our community.

We encourage anyone age 15 or older who is interested in becoming a certified lifeguard to contact Buhl City Hall at (208) 543-5650 to learn more about training opportunities. With greater community involvement, we are hopeful that the pool will reopen next year with a full and capable staff.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to ensure a safe and vibrant summer environment for Buhl.
